Nikolay Davydenko - Runner-up: Qatar Open 2011
Nikolay Davydenko starts 2011 with a runner-up finish to Roger Federer in the Qatar Open. He has now fallen to #22 in the rankings, but his performance in this tournament belies the ability of a Top 5 player. His wrist injury last year affected his performances towards the latter of the year. However, by beating Nadal here, he has shown that he still enough skills to cause trouble to at least one of the two pillars of present-day men's tennis. He is the defending champion here so he actually loses points here but at least, it's good preparation and confidence booster for the upcoming Australian Open. This was Nikolay's path to the finals -
F - lost to Roger Federer (SUI) (#2) 63 64
SF - Rafael Nadal (ESP) (#1) 63 62
QF - Ivo Karlovic (CRO) (#73) 63 75
2R - Jarkko Nieminen (FIN) (#39) 64 75
1R - Fabio Fognini (ITA) (#55) 61 64
Look at all those emphatic scorelines. I hope he goes deeper into the Australian Open this year.
