Rankings Watch: ATP Tour - Soderling is Now #4 in the World

Fresh from his Paris triumph last week, Robin Soderling moves up one place to become the #4 player in the world!  Impressive!  With his ascension, it makes men's tennis more interesting since there is now a triumvirate which can cause an upset in next year's Grand Slams just in case Roger or Rafa slip up(which is - rarely!)  Roger and Rafa have always been in a world of their own, especially in the Slams.  It's just that they have the ability to really raise their games on the crucial moments.  In due time, Novak, Robin or Andy may assert their dominance but for the next 2-3 years, Rafa or Roger may still have a lot in them to continue dominating men's tennis.

Elsewhere, Jurgen Melzer is knocking at the door of the Top 10 at #11, along with Gael Monfils, who climbs to #12, after being the beaten finalist in Paris.  Americans Mardy Fish and Sam Querrey also move up two places to #16 and #18 respectively.  Michael Llodra zooms up 11 places to #23, and ensures that he is seeded in the Aussie Open next year.

Robin Soderling is the Paris Masters Champion!

Robin Soderling ends the year with the Paris Masters Cup championship title!  That says a lot about what Robin can actually achieve next yearr, considering the field he was in, it just shows that Robin is definitely a contender for the Slams next year.  He had to defeat Gael Monfils to win the title.  Here is his path to the championship -

Finals - Gael Monfils (FRA) (#14) 6-1, 7-6
SF - Michael Llodra (FRA) (#34) 6-7 7-5 7-6
QF - Andy Roddick (USA) (#8) 7-5, 6-4
3R - Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI) (#27) 7-6, 6-3
2R - Gilles Simon (FRA) (#43) 6-4, 6-0
1R - BYE

Because of the luck of the draw, he did not have to meet Federer (who lost to Monfils in the SFs), Murray (who lost to Monfils in the QFs) and Djokovic (who lost to Llodra in the 3rd round) - the top 3 seeded players in this meet.

Three Good Reasons Why It's Time to Adopt A World Cup Format For Tennis

Yes, tennis has the four Grand Slams to get us excited with every year, but I think it can generate more interest, if it adopts a World Cup format with a four-year cycle, which is now being used in football.  I can come up with three good reasons why it's time to adopt a World Cup format.

The first good reason is due to the increasing popularity of tennis as an international sport.  WIth that format, it would surely attract more attention because nations are involved, and not individuals, which the Grand Slam format supports.

A second good reason is that it would attract more sponsorship money coming from more diverse sources especially in countries that can produce up and coming, exciting players.

A third good reason is that it would spread further the popularity of the sport and make it more appealing to the masses. It can attract kids from the most unlikely countries to give the sport a try - which could only be good for the sport!

A four year format, similar to the football World Cup would be good since it would make the Cup more coveted for the players.

Now, let's just hope the WTA and the ATP tours have the courage to bring these plans to fruition.

Rankings Watch - ATP Tour - November 8, 2010

The year is almost drawing to a close so everyone is scrambling to land in the Top 8, to be invited to the Year-End Championships in London, and of course, in the Top 10, to have the honor of being a Top 10 player for the year 2010.

David Ferrer, the Valencia Open champion, moves up from #8 to #7.  Andy Roddick, a semifinalist in Basel, moves from #9 to #8.  There is still the Paris Masters this week, so anything can still happen in the Top 8 players for the championship, as well as in the year-endTop 10.

In the Top 20, Sam Querrey, moves from #22 to #20.  David Nalbandian moves four places to #25.  Victor Troicki, a semifinalist in Basel, moves from #32 to #29.

Here are the Top 3 movers within the Top 100.  The biggest mover, moving 18 places, was Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili who bolts from #99 to #81.  Next is Frenchman Gilles Simon, a quarterfinalist in Valencia, who moves from #52 to #43.  Finally, Dutchman Robin Haase, moves eight places from #66 to #58.

Ana Ivanovic Ends Year On A Positive Note

Ana Ivanovic ends the year on a high note by winning the Bali Tournament of Championships - a sudden death type of tournament.  So on her path to the title, Ana had wins over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Kimiko Date Krumm and Alisa Kleybanova in the final.  Because of her win, it would be great to see how she performs next year.  Adds more excitement to the mix in the WTA Tour!

David Ferrer Beefs Up His Points After Winning Valencia Title

David Ferrer wins his second title this year in Valencia by beating fellowman, Marcel Granollers.  He won his first title this year in Acapulco.  This was David's path to his title -

Finals - Marcel Granollers (ESP) (#67) 7-5, 6-3
SFs - Robin Soderling (SWE) (#5) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3
QFs - Potito Starace (ITA) (#55) 7-5, 6-4
2R - Teymuraz Gabashvili (RUS) (#99) 6-4 6-1
1R - Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (ESP) (#30) 6-7, 6-3, 6-3

Federer Wins Hometown Title in Basel

Roger Federer wins in his hometown Basel, confirming his deserved #2 ranking by downing Novak Djokovic.  This was his path to his Basel title -

Finals - Novak Djokovic (SRB) (#3) 6-4, 3-6, 6-1
SFs -  Andy Roddick (USA) (#9) 6-2, 6-4
QFs - Radek Stepanek (CZE) (#38) 6-3, 6-2
2R - Janko Tipsarevic (SRB) (#46) 6-3, 6-4
1R - Alexandr Dolgopolov (UKR) (#48) 6-4, 5-2 Abandoned

All of Federer's opponents are competent and talented so I think he's really playing well right now.

The Race to the Final Eight Heats Up - ATP Championships

The quarterfinals of the Valencia and the Basel Open is now concluded and the players left who can still make an impact on the Top 8 positions are the following:

1.  Roger Federer #2 - 7495 points
2. Novak Djokovic #3 - 7145 points
3.  Robin Soderling #5 - 4780 points
4.  David Ferrer #8 - 3325 points
5.  Andy Roddick # 9 - 3260 points
6.  Nikolay Davydenko #11 - 2955 points
7.  Gael Monfils #14 - 2485 points

This is important since eight players are needed to complete the lineup in the upcoming ATP Championships to be held in London.  Obviously, no matter what happens from this point on, Federer, Djokovic and Soderling are already shoo-ins.

However, the difference between positions #6 (where Berdych is) and #14 (where Monfils is) is just 1230 points.  The championship points for Valencia is 500 points.  Basel should have similar points.

Andy Roddick is just 65 points away from David Ferrer and 70 points from Verdasco.  However, he has to win the Basel Open since Ferrer is also playing in Valencia.  He might overtake Verdasco though.  Roddick's task is daunting since Federer is in his side of the draw - and if he does win, he may possibly, have to defeat Djokovic.  Not an easy path!

Davydenko is 370 points away from Ferrer and 375 points from Verdasco.  He may reach the final in Valencia, since his next opponent is not a Top 10 player.  In the finals, he could possibly meet Ferrer or Soderling.

Verdasco and Berdych may lose their slots since they are not actively playing and if the rivals mentioned above are successful in their championship bids.

Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray are the other definite shoo-ins for the ATP Championships.

Rankings Watch: AP Tour - November 1

Gael Monfils moves one place from #15 to #14 this week, after winning the Montpellier Open last week.  However, the biggest mover within the Top 100 is Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan, who moves from #88 to #58 after winning the St. Petersburg Open last week.  Another big mover is Ilya Marchenko of the Ukraine, a semi-finalist in the same event. He moves from #99 to #81.  Adrian Mannarino of France enters the Top 100 at #97.  Dmitry Tursunov, a semifinalist in St. Petersburg, jumps 71 places to #193.  Andreas Haider-Maurer, a losing finalist in the Vienna Open jumps 42 places to #115.

Mikhail Kukushkin Wins His First ATP title in St. Petersburg

Mikhail Kukushkin, becomes the second Kazakhstani this year, to win an ATP title, the other one, being Andrey Golubev.  He is also the fifth first time winner of an ATP title this year.  This is also his first victory against a current Top 10 player, Mikhail Youzhny. Below is his path to the championship -

Finals - Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) (#10) 6-3, 7-6
SFs - Ilya Marchenko (UKR) (#99) 6-3, 6-4
QFs - Janko Tipsarevic (SRB) (#46) 7-5, 3-6, 6-4
2R - Teymuraz Gabashvili (RUS) (#105) 6-3, 6-4
1R - Jeremy Chardy (FRA) (#49) 6-7, 6-1, 6-0

Gael Monfils Wins the Montpellier Open

In the inaugural of the Montpellier Open, it is just fitting that the winner is also a Frenchman - Gael Monfils.  He wins his third ATP title by beating Ivan Ljubicic 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.  He was challenged throughout this tournament by John Isner and his compatriot, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, both giving him good competition.  It's good that he continues in his winning ways and I hope he really does better next year, since he's so  near the Top 10.  This was his path to the championship -

Finals - Ivan Ljubicic (CRO) (#17) 6-2, 5-7, 6-1
SFs - Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) (#13) 7-6, 2-6, 6-4
QFs - John Isner (USA)(#19) 3-6, 6-4, 6-4
2R - Steve Darcis (BEL) (#112) 6-4, 6-4
1R - BYE
