Maria Sharapova will meet #90-ranked veteran Melinda Czink in the first round of the 2012 US Open. The two have never met. Czink reached the round of 16 in both Carlsbad and Washington DC. Sharapova competed in the Olympic Games where she won the silver medal in the women's singles. Sharapova should come through her first round match in 2 sets.
Sharapova is in a very easy part of the draw, probably the easiest draw I've ever seen her be in! Nadia Petrova and Lucie Hradecka are the ones expected to give her some competition. Petra Kvitova is also on her side of the draw along with Marion Bartoli and Yanina Wickmayer. Bartoli and Wickmayer though have had a lackluster summer and I don't think Kvitova will have a problem disposing of them on her path to a quarterfinal showdown with Sharapova.
I choose Maria Sharapova to go to the semi's. This is the US Open after all and she was a previous champion, so she knows how to fight in these grounds.
