Monica Niculescu (#57) of Romania was the Cinderella story of this year's Beijing Open, going all the way to the semifinals of this prestigious event. I think things started to turn around for Monica around the US Open this year, when she was a surprise fourth round visitor, when she was ranked #68. She immediately followed that good performance with a semifinal here in Beijing.
She lost though to Andrea Petkovic (#11) 26 06. She beat Maria Kirilenko (#24) in the quarterfinals 36 63 64, Virginie Razzano (#110) in the third round 46 61 62, and Channelle Scheepers (#41) in the second round 62 61.
Her biggest scalp though was ousting Li Na (#6) in the first round 64 60.
