Angelique Kerber is my US Open 2011 pick for the breakout female player. Currently ranked #107, Kerber is one of the three German women to reach this Slam's fourth round! Definitely some sort of Renaissance for German women's tennis!
Kerber was in the Top 50 last year, ending 2010 in #47, her highest rank ever. However, she has had a lackadaisical 2011 so her ranking has plunged a bit. Anyhow, she has done really well in the US Open now and looks like she has found her form again. She also ended 2007 at #87, ending in the Top 100 for two years. That could be a possibility this year because of her perfomance here.
It has been a great week for Kerber, defeating Monica Niculescu (#68) of Romania 64 63 in the fourth round, getting into her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal! In the third round, she won over Alla Kudryavtseva (#77) of Russia. It was her second round match that caused a lot of sensation, as she handed Agnieszka Radwanska (#13) the ticket home, winning 63 46 63. Her first round match was against Lauren Davis (#329) from the USA.
Her next round opponent could either be Peng Shuai or Flavia Pennetta, both tough customers!
