Jelena Jankovic was this blog's improbable pick to take the semi-final slot for this side of the draw, even if red-hot Garbine Muguruza was in the mix.
It turned out though that another former champion may actually get the semi-final slot. Five time champion Venus Williams (#8) looks like the semi-final slot in her side of the draw is hers for the taking, based on the current head-to-head.
Today, she won over Spanish player Carla Suarez Navarro (#12) 76(3) 64. Her quarterfinal opponent is Yaroslava Shvedova (#96) of Kazakhstan which she has a winning record against.
It's pretty exciting news if all this pans out for Venus. She may even meet sister Serena Williams in the finals!
The last time Venus was this deep into the draw was in 2012, when she won the title.
