Roger Federer: Finding Touches of His Old Self
Actually, even if he lost to Rafael Nadal in last Sunday's final, I think Roger did a really good job in this tournament, considering his relatively dismal performance this season - that is dismal if you were as good as Roger! Since we're so used to him winning titles right and left, we tend to say he's lost it when just gets to the semi's or quarters of some tournaments.
However, when it mattered most, that is in the big world stage of the Grand Slams, Roger once again rose to the occasion and slayed in spectacular fashion, tennis du jour's golden boy, Novak Djokovic, in the semifinals. It was incredible how Roger just put so much pressure on Novak that the latter folded in defeat and in awe.
Of course, we knew that he had to do much more to defeat the King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, and in a way, we expected him to lose in the final. I did get excited a bit when he was up 5-2 in the first set, but Rafa was incessant and would not go away. After Rafa won 7-5 in the first set, we knew that Roger was already giving up.
However, this bodes well for him in Wimbledon, which is just a month from now. At least we know now that Roger still has that fire to slay all the upcoming golden boys du jour of tennis if he wants to. So a 17th Grand Slam title is not farfetched.
