MYSTERIES OF TENNIS: Why do they say love to connote zero or nil?

The game that we know as “tennis” was originally played many, many years ago.  In its original form, it was played by ancient Greeks.  As time progressed, it became popular in France and was played by religious clerics in monasteries.  Travelers using the hospitality of the monks learned about the game.  The travelers shared their knowledge of the game with friends and acquaintances and it soon became popular among the upper classes.  Eventually, in 1873, Major Walter Clopton Wingfield developed a game based on the French game of “Tenez” (which meant “Hold” or “I am about to serve”).  Major Winfield patented his version of the French game in 1874 using the French words and scoring system.  The word “Love,” meaning “zero” or “nothing” was based on the French word “L’oeuf” meaning “egg.”  The shape of the egg was like the figure Zero or a goose egg.
