Fantasy Play: If this week were the Year-End Championships.....
Since it's the first week of April, I am now going to play a fantasy game, every first week of the month which I will call 'What if it were the Year-End Championships Now' Game, using the current ranking for that week.
So if it were the WTA Year-End Championships this week, the groupings will look like this -
Group 1 (Seeds 1, 3, 5, 8)
Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)
Vera Zvonareva (RUS)
Samantha Stosur (AUS)
Jelena Jankovic (SRB)
Group 2 (Seeds 2, 4, 6, 7)
Kim Clijsters (BEL)
Francesca Schiavone (ITA)
Victoria Azarenka (BLR)
Li Na (CHN)
Using their current head-to-heads, the results for Group 1 would look like this
GROUP 1
Jelena Jankovic (SRB) - 2 wins, 1 loss - 14 points
Samantha Stosur (AUS) - 2 wins, 1 loss - 10 points
Vera Zvonareva (RUS) - 1 win, 2 losses - 14 points
Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) - 1 win, 2 losses, 7 points
Jelena Jankovic tops Group 1, with wins over Stosur and Wozniacki. She lost to Zvonareva. Samantha Stosur will also go to the semis, with big wins over Wozniacki and Zvonareva.
GROUP 2
Kim Clijsters (BEL) - 3 wins, 0 loss
Li Na (CHN) - 1 win, 2 losses - 7 points
Victoria Azarenka (BLR) - 1 win, 2 losses - 5 points
Francesca Schiavone (ITA) - 1 win, 2 losses - 3 points
Kim easily tops this group. Li Na is the surprise semi-finalist winning over Azarenka, and by points system, gets the semi's slot.
SEMIFINAL PAIRINGS
Jelena Jankovic (SRB) vs. Li Na (CHN) 3-4 head-to-head
Samantha Stosur (AUS) vs. Kim Clijsters (BEL) 0-5 head-to-head
Surprisingly, Li Na has a 4-3 head-to-head with Jelena and so she goes to the finals! Expectedly, Kim has a 5-0 head-to-head with Samantha, so she goes to the finals.
FINALS:
Kim Clijsters (BEL) vs. Li Na (CHN) 5-2 head-to-head
So, if the WTA Year-End Championships were held this week, Kim Clijsters would be the champion, and Li Na would be the Runner-Up. That's all based on head-to-head, of course!
