I have been writing about tennis for twelve years now, grand slam after grand slam, and it's remarkable that Roger Federer has been there almost every grand slam as a pick to win the title.
Almost every grand slam. That's how incredibly consistent and reliable he is.
It's now 2018 and he's coming back as defending champion of the Australian Open, and incredibly enough, he still has a chance to lift yet another grand slam title (#20??)
He will play Richard Gasquet later tonight and possibly a new Hungarian player in Fucsovics in the 4R and possibly again, del Potro in the quarters.
In a way, the draw looks favourably at him, having wins over all those players in the past - and with his current form, most likely he may win still, although Richard and Juan Martin may give him some opposition.
In the semi's the new babies are in the horizon (either Thiem or Zverev) and will surely give him some fight, and then, hopefully, Rafa in the final.
He still looks very agile in court even at 36, and has clinically defeated most of his lower-ranked opponents in the earlier rounds.
It's a treat that Roger's renaissance is happening here in Melbourne. We get treated to sublime tennis very early on in the new year.
