Mona Barthel of Germany (#36) has been trying to assert herself in the tournaments she has been appearing in but hasn't made much headway for now. Her semifinal appearance here in Quebec City is her first since Bastad.
Her first assignment was tough enough, having to beat Heather Watson, who was on a high after a good run in the US Open 2012. She continued her winning ways until she was upset by Flipkens.
