Rafael Nadal (ESP) (#1) last won Indian Wells in 2009, but this year, he had to satisfy himself with a runner up trophy as he lost to Novak Djokovic in the finals. It's been a bit of a spotty year for Rafa with no title yet. A semifinal in Doha, a quarterfinal in Melbourne, and a finals appearance here. This was Rafa's path to the finals -
F - lost to Novak Djokovic (SRB) (#3) 64 36 26
SF - Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) (#90) 64 64
QF - Ivo Karlovic (CRO) (#239) 57 61 76(7)
4R - Somdev Devvarman (IND) (#84) 75 64
3R - Ryan Sweeting (USA) (#105) 63 61
2R - Rik de Voest (RSA) (#162) 60 62
1R - BYE
