Ernests Gulbis is a former top 10 player and is again, slowly making his way back into the top 100 of men's tennis. He is still a long way off though currently ranked at #589.
However, he is the lowest ranked player to go the deepest in Wimbledon 2017, so he gets the Male Breakthrough Player for this grand slam.
This award is given to new and up-and-coming players as well as returning veterans.
