Russia wins this year's Elite Women's Team Award in a hotly contested competition.  Italy, the Czech Republic and the US were also in contention with two players each but Russia had the lowest sum of all the countries.  The winning players were Maria Sharapova (#2) and Ekaterina Makarova (#9).

Elite Women's Team Award US Open 2014: Russia

In a hotly contested Elite Women's Team Award for the US Open 2014, Russia wins the award this year - as Maria Sharapova and Ekaterina Makarova's combined rankings of 24 give the country the award.

This website awards the Elite Women's Team Award to the country who has the most players through to the fourth round of each of the grand slams.  If an eventuality of a tie, the current weekly ranking of the players into the fourth round, for each country, is added up, and the country with the smallest sum wins.

Italy was a close second with a sum of 26.  Sara Errani and Flavia Pennetta make up the Italian team.  Serbia was in third place with a sum of 153.  Jelena Jankovic and Aleksandra Krunic make up the Serbian team.

Czech Republic: Elite Women's Team Award for 2014 Wimbledon

The Czech Republic has won the Elite Women's Team Award for the 2014 Wimbledon!  I think this is their first award ever.  This year, they are led by Petra Kvitova, Lucie Safarova, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and Tereza Smitkova.

This year, this award has gone to three different countries - the US (Australian Open), Russia (French Open) and the Czech Republic (Wimbledon).

French Open 2014: Elite Women's Team Award

Russia wins the 2014 French Open Elite Women's Team Award putting two players in the fourth round - Maria Sharapova (#8) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (#28).

Actually, two other countries placed two players in the fourth round, Germany and Spain, but the total sum of the seedings of the Russian players was the lowest among the three countries, making it win the award.

Wimbledon 2012: Elite Women's Team Country Award

This is the grass in Wimbledon but it is very surprising to find Italy win the Elite Women's Team Country Award this year!  Their players are not really known to be that proficient on grass.  But not anymore.  This award proves that these Italian women can play in all types of surfaces!

I don't remember Italy ever winning this award!  Three Italian women have entered the fourth round of Wimbledon 2012!  Incredible!  They are lead by 23rd seed Roberta Vinci, 26th seed and French Open champion Francesca Schiavone and surprise, surprise, 145th seed Camila Giorgi, who also wins the Breakout Player Award for Wimbledon 2012.

Bravo Italia!

French Open 2012: Elite Women's Team Country Award

Every Grand Slam, this blog picks a country for the Elite Team Country Award.  It's awarded to the country that has the most number of players to have reached the fourth round.  Russia normally has a lock on this award for the past few years but last Australian Open, the award went to Serbia.

Well, for this year's French Open, three countries had two players each in the fourth round - USA (surprisingly no Williams sisters), the Czech Republic and of course, Russia.

Russia wins the award this year as the sum of the seedings of the two players in the fourth round - Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova, only add up to 30, the smallest number.

Runner-up is the Czech Republic, whose sum is 48.  Their team is composed of Petra Kvitova and Klara Zakopalova.

Finally, the USA has Sloane Stephens and Varvara Lepchenko, for a sum of 133.

Australian Open 2012: Elite Women's Team Country Award

The MyFABETennis blog awards the Elite Women's Team Country Award to the country with the most number of players into the fourth round.  If there is a tie, the sum of the seedings of the players of those countries who are tied is taken and the country with the lowest sum, gets the award.  Just in case a tie occurs in the sum, the country with the highest seed gets the award.

Russia has been perennially winning the awards slam after slam after slam for the past decade because of their deep bench.  However, cracks have been showing in the Russian system and for this Australian Open, another country wins the award.  Surprisingly, it's Serbia, when none of its Top 2 players are even in the Top 10.  But since there is a five way country tie in the number of players into the fourth round - that is two - Serbia, China, Germany, Russia and the Czech Republic were all tied.  However, when the sum of the seedings of the two players were added, it was Serbia who had the lowest seedings sum of 35.  I think this is the first time Serbia got this award.

The other countries with entries in the fourth round are -

China - 2
Czech Republic - 2
Germany -2
Russia - 2
Belarus - 1
Belgium - 1
Denmark - 1
Italy - 1
Poland - 1
USA - 1

US Open 2011: Elite Women's Team Country Award

Russia expectedly gets my pick for the Elite Women's Team Award again!  I don't think they have ever lost this award for the past few years, except I think for one Grand Slam where the US got it.  In this year's Wimbledon, they had three players in the fourth round and in the French Open, they had six.

The depth of the Russian women's game is so deep that only Vera Zvonareva is in the Top 10 right now.  Former US Open champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anastasia Pavlychenkova are both in the Top 20, while Maria Kirilenko is in the Top 30.

The following are the other countries who have made it to the elite list -

Germany - 3 players in the fourth round
Italy - 2
Australia - 1
China - 1
Denmark - 1
Romania - 1
Serbia - 1
Spain - 1
USA - 1
