While the upper section of the women's draw have the veterans slugging for the finals spot in this year's US Open, the underachievers yet very talented and relatively new players are in the bottom.
Simona Halep, like Petra Kvitova, the other top seed on their section of the draw, has also been severely underachieving in this year's grand slams. She did reach the quarters in the Aussie Open but fell early in the next two slams.
She looked like she was undergoing some limelight crisis, which is not uncommon for new players suddenly thrust into the limelight after a great showing in a slam. In 2014, Simona almost won the French Open title, fighting fiercely against Maria Sharapova.
However, she has been doing really well in this summer's US Open series so she really is the player who has the means to upset Serena's 2015 grand slam achievement.
Another in-form player, Lucie Safarova, stands in the way of Simona, so it would be an interesting match-up, in case both women do meet in the quarters.
