US Open 2010: Women Players Who Reached the Round of 64 but are Ranked Outside the Top 100

Reaching the Round of 64 of a Grand Slam is tough, especially for those who are ranked outside the Top 100.  Most likely, they had to qualify first, then have to defeat a seeded player or at least, a Top 100 player, just to secure a spot there.  Well, here are several female players, some newbies, some veterans, who secured a spot in the Round of 64 but whose rank is outside the Top 100.  They are from the bottom draw.  Here they are:

1.  Pauline Parmentier of France, currently ranked #105, buzzes in and out of the Top 100, but her win over Brianti of Italy, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, should propel her back there when the rankings are next released.  She lost to Shahar Peer today, 6-2, 6-3.  At least, she made the second round!

2. Maria Elena Camerin of Italy, a veteran player, currently ranked #130 won over Sophie Ferguson, 6-4, 6-0.  She faced fellow Italian, Schiavone, and promptly lost, 6-2, 6-1.  At least she reached the second round!

3.  Virginie Razzano is a veteran French player, currently ranked #157.  She was a former Top 40 player so she is no stranger to the Slams.  Her first opponent was Czech veteran, Zakopalova, whom she dispatched, 6-3, 62. Today, she beat her countrywoman, Bartoli, 7-5, 6-4 to reach the third round where she will meet Ana Ivanovic.  It's going to be a tough match for her but not impossible!

4.  Sania Mirza of India, another former Top 40 player, now ranked #159, beat Larcher De Brito, 6-3, 6-2.  She faced teenager, Pavlyuchenkova today, and lost to her, 2-6, 4-6. She recently got married though so she can be excused.  She should slowly rise back to the Top 100 soon.

5.  Rebecca Marino of Canada, ranked # 179, won over Pervak, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.  However, today, she lost promptly to Venus Williams, 7-6, 6-3, but still, she gave Williams some problems in the first set.  She can still improve a lot and she doesn't look intimidated by the top players.

6.  Mandy Minella of Luxembourg, currently ranked # 185, shocked Hercog 6-4, 7-5, to become the first woman I remember, from her country, to reach the second round of a Slam!  And more good news!  Today, she dumped Pironkova, this year's Wimbledon semifinalist, 6-4, 6-0 and she's through to the 3rd round! Bravo!  She has a very tough opponent though, Venus Williams.  Let's see how much damage she can do!

7.  Sally Peers of Australia, ranked #201, defeated Wozniak in the first round, 6-1, 6-0, impressive!  However, tonight, Clijsters defeated her easily, 6-2, 6-1.  We hope to see more of this girl and hope she reaches the Top 200 very soon!
