After a great run at the US Open last year with a semi-final appearance, Russia's Ekaterina Makarova continues that streak here in the Australian Open at the start of the 2015 tennis season. For years, Makarova has been at the outer periphery of the top echelons of women's tennis, not quite in the top 10, but had the ability to defeat champions like Serena and Bartoli at the grand slam stage. So to any tennis observer, she had what it takes to break into the deeper part of the grand slam, if only she keeps her game consistent.
She was already a quarterfinalist here in '12 and '13, so reaching the semi's this year, after defeating Simona Halep of Romania, should push her finally, into the top 10 soon as the rankings come out, regardless of how deep she reaches into the tournament.
