Matches I've Seen Today: Li Na vs. Ksenia Pervak

Ksenia Pervak is a competent player but today, her game just failed her as her match with French Open champion Li Na went on.  She was toe to toe with Li at 44 but lost a break and Li went on to win 64.  In the second set, she was at 11 but again, her service was inconsistent and her shots frayed, allowing Li to dominate her 61.

Ksenia Pervak: Tashkent Open 2011 Champion

It's not like Russia needed another good player, but Ksenia Pervak (#37) finally has broken into the WTA winner's circle, winning her first title here in the Tashkent Open.  She defeated Czech Eva Birnerova (#93) in the finals 63 61 and Urszula Radwanska (#105) of Poland in the semi's 62 64.

In the quarters, she edged Victoria Larriere (#208) of France 61 62.  In the second round, she edged local player, Sabina Sharipova (#472) of Uzbekistan 63 63.  In the first round, she defeated Galina Voskoboeva (#82) of Kazakhstan 62 75.

Ksenia Pervak: Another Russian Hopeful

The Russian juggernaut in women's tennis knows no end.  At the Baku event last week, when #13 seed Pavlyuchenkova fell in the quarters, Ksenia Pervak immediately took her place in their side of the draw, to ensure an all-Russian final.  Vera Zvonareva, the eventual title-holder, was the other finalist.  Ksenia has been steadily climbing the rankings and she's currently at #51 this week.

Getting To Know Ksenia Pervak

As if Russia needed another good player, Ksenia Pervak shows how deep that country's bench is in women's tennis.  Ranked #89 in the world, she's the lowest ranked player in the draw to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon 2011 - and one good thing going for her is that her fourth round opponent is just ranked 9 places ahead of her, Tamira Paszek.  Tamira though has one advantage.  This is her second time in the fourth round so she already knows how it feels to be in this stage of the tournament.

It was a tough road for Ksenia as she had to defeat Shahar Peer of Israel (#22) in the first round, Pauline Parmentier of France (#74) in the second round and Andrea Petkovic (#13) of Germany in the third round - players all ranked higher than her.  Since Tamira and she have almost equal rankings, it would be interesting to note who would take it a notch higher.

I am actually counting on Ksenia to do that since Tamira must be tired now after her almost four hour match against Schiavone. Anyhow, let's see who of these two girls want that quarterfinal slot the most!
