Paul-Henri Mathieu: Player Ranked Outside Top 100 Who's Into Third Round of French Open 2012

Veteran French player, Paul-Henri Mathieu gets into the second round of Roland Garros this year for the seventh time and he has reached as far as the fourth round twice, in 2002 and 2008.  He defeated Bjorn Phau, in his first round assignment, the German currently ranked #85.  Mathieu is currently ranked #261 right now. His second round match today against John Isner, ranked #11 in the world, was a freakin' marathon!  They reached 18 16 in the fifth set!! And Mathieu reaches the third round!  Tres cool! Horacio Zeballos: Player Ranked Outside Top 100 Who's Into Second Round of French Open 2012

Three years ago, Argentine Horacio Zeballos was a Top 50 player. This is the second time he reaches the second round of Roland Garros.  This time around, he defeated local boy Eric Prodon, ranked #115 in the first round 67(8) 63 63 62.  He has a tougher second round opponent in South African Kevin Anderson, ranked #34.

Florent Serra: Player Ranked Outside Top 100 Who's Into Second Round of French Open 2012

Six years ago, Florent Serra was a Top 40 player and in 2008, reached the third round of Roland Garros.  Nowadays, he's ranked #156.  His first round opponent, Spanish Feliciano Lopez, ranked #15, retired, so Serra is now in the second round, drawn to fight Lukasz Kubot of Poland, ranked #49.  He has a good chance of making it to the third round! Good luck to him!

Arnaud Clement: Player Ranked Outside Top 100 Who's Into Second Round of French Open 2012

It's great to see Arnaud Clement still playing in the good old age of 34 - and that he won his first round match against a younger (29) and higher-ranked (#46) player, Alex Bogomolov Jr., is cause for celebration.  Ranked #139 in the world right now, the end of the road career-wise is getting nearer for the celebrated Frenchman.

Here in Roland Garros, his best accomplishment was a 4th round appearance almost a decade ago - in 2003.  His chances of equaling that is great as his next opponent is a greenhorn, David Goffin, ranked #109 on paper.  Anyhow, let's take it one round at a time and see how far Arnaud's wheels take him!

David Goffin: Breakout Player French Open 2012

David Goffin of Belgium is another unknown entity for me. Ranked #109 in the world, he has never reached a Top 100 ranking ever.  However, because of his second round appearance here, he just might achieve that, after the French Open is over.  He defeated wily Czech veteran Radek Stepanek in the first round in five sets - 62 46 26 62 64.

In the second round, he defeated another veteran, Frenchman Arnaud Clement (#139) 36 76(2) 06 62 61.  In the third round, he ran into Lukasz Kubot of Poland (#49) 76(4) 75 61.  He then was forced into the spotlight, as he took a set away from legendary player Roger Federer in the fourth round 75 57 26 46. The soft-spoken Belge got the respect of Federer.

Having been the lowest-ranked player to reach the third round in this Grand Slam, we award David Goffin the breakout player for the French Open 2012.
