Dennis Novikov: Player Ranked Outside the Top 100 Who Reached the Second Round of the US Open 2012

Dennis Novikov of the US, is probably the lowest ranked player I have ever known to reach the second round of a Grand Slam.  Ranked at #1098, he defeated Jerzy Janowicz of Poland, ranked #86 in the world, in the first round the US Open, 62 76(6) 36 63.  He will meet French veteran Julien Benneteau in the second round, ranked #35 in the world.
