Juan Monaco: Surprise Semi-finalist in the Shanghai Masters
In an event where the world's Top 20 is in attendance, and where the Top 4 was sure to be in the semi's, it was then a big surprise that one of the semifinal slots went to someone ranked at #41 in the world. Juan Monaco of Argentina achieved just that this week, at the prestigious Shanghai Masters! He was able to do that as he defeated Jurgen Melzer of Austria in the quarterfinals. Melzer dispatched the number 1 player in the world today, Rafael Nadal, in the 3rd round. Djokovic, Federer and Murray proceeded to fill up the remaining 3 slots, as expected. Today, Monaco lost to Murray in the semi's. Nevertheless, this achievement should propel him closer to the Top 32, the number of seeds in a Grand Slam.
